Abstract/Contents:"The turfgrass seed industry has experienced extraordinary changes in the past 40 years in the areas of breeding, production, distribution and marketing. New methods, equipmnet and research have helped a great deal in all aspects of the industry. Changes have been most evident in the intense breeding for color, fine texture, disease resistance and drought tolerance in the turf-type tall fescues. Warm season grasses traditionally bred for southern use are moving north due to the breeding of cold tolerance into Bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass. The most significant change in breeding is the time it takes to release a new cultivar. It used to take 10-12 years to release a new bluegrass. But, traditional plant breeding methods have been shortened to six to eight years. With biotechnology techniques, the time frame could be reduced to fewer than three to four years." Discusses in detail the changes that have occurred in different aspects of the turfgrass seed industry. Topics covered include shrinking production areas, distribution, major challenges and problems, market competition, changes in selling, golf course expansion and trends of turfgrass industry.
