| Abstract/Contents: | Eight kinds of bark composts were tested against peat mixtures to ascertain which possessed qualities more favorable to turf grasses, particularly, which had greater water permeability, water retention , nitrogen content as well as pH levels. They were tested in sand mixtures and sand/soil mixtures. ".... The organic matter content of the sand mixtures was increased more by bark compost than by [the] same volume of peat. The water-holding capacity in the laboratory was greater with bark mixtures...but in the field trial the water content at field capacity in the bark mixtures, though assessed several times, did not reach the values for the peat mixture. The N utilization with bark in the year of sowing was considerably less than with peat, and less, even, than with pure sand. ..." This proves to be a lasting problem with the application of bark composts, which has yet to be solved. |
