Abstract/Contents:"Domestic waste compost and bark compost, with and without soil conditioners (Alginure and ACS), were used to accelerate revegetation of an opencast mining site near Helmstedt, in the German Federal Republic. In order to prevent wind erosion and the development of dust, a rapid establishment of a vegetative [blanket] was aimed at. The percentage plant cover and the vitality of the grasses were significantly higher on the plots amended with domestic waste compost than on the bark compost plots or those without compost. The soil conditioners ACS and Alginure gave increases in vitality and plant cover. Soil microbial biomass and activity (measured as the rate of arginine ammonification) were clearly higher on the domestic waste compost plots.... This may be attributed to the input of nutrients and of easily degraded organic matter. Bark compost showed less effect on these microbiological parameters. No effects of ACS of Alginure could be discovered."
