Abstract/Contents:"Calcined sulphate of iron was compared to a liquid formulation containing iron/sulphur/nitrogen; chelated iron; and chelated iron/sulphur for effects on turf colour, clippings and soil pH, and inhibition of fusarium patch disease and earthworm casting. Whilst all treatments had a significant darkening effect on turf colour, the greatest effect was observed by calcined sulphate of iron applied as a foliar spray. An alternative short-term greening of the turf surface was produced by the liquid iron/sulphur/nitrogen treatment. Significant reductions in turf clippings, surface soil and sub-surface soil pH were recorded after repeated applications of calcinated sulphate of iron, and corresponding increases of pH recorded following repeated applications of chelated iron and chelated iron/sulphur. The liquid iron/sulphur/nitrogen treatment had no significant effect on turf pH. In the field trial, all treatments significantly reduced fusarium patch disease, although no direct toxicity of any treatment on Microdochium nivale in vitro was detected. All treatments except the liquid iron/sulphur/nitrogen formulation significantly reduced earthworm casting."
