"To summarize the key habitat features you should be encouraging: a. a complex habitat allows for more diversity of resources (insects, fruits and seeds) and therefore, birds; b. 60-70% of resident bird species in B. C. are cavity nesters and use cavities to roost in the winter. Maintain standing and fallen dead trees where-ever you can; c. understory foliage diversity provides cover from predators and the fruiting shrubs are essential for winter food; d. roughs are key natural areas. Tall grasses are excellent for invertebrate prey; e. availability of water is often the most important factor attracting wildlife, both for drinking and for keeping feathers clean to retain their body heat."
