Abstract/Contents: | Details the expansion of a nine hole course inside a national park. The park staff was very concerned about the impact the course would have on the surrounding wildlife and set very strict rules that the course designers and builders would have to follow. "1. 30m vegetation buffers between all turf and river; 2. 15m considered in certain areas; 3. erect silt fencing in all work areas adjacent to rivers and estuary; 4. silt dams in all swales draining to rivers; 5. work adjacent to rivers to commence after September and completed before June; 6. steep slopes Hydro-seeded or sodded immediately following grading operations; 7. maintain large contiguous blocks of vegetation, avoid fragmentation." In addition, once the course was built, another set of rules for maintenance were established. "1. Use of insecticides is prohibited in the Park. 2. Use of herbicides and fungicides is restricted on all turf areas in close proximity to rivers. 3. Application of chemicals must be in late evenings to minimize exposure to wildlife and golfers. 4. Application of fertilizer, lime and chemicals is to be on calm days with no rain in the forecast." |
