Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study is to determine the influence of cultural treatments with emphasis on summer stress resistance of a blend of perennial ryegrass cultivars with emphasis on decreasing disease incidence. Management treatments were initiated in April, 1992. Principal attention is given to rates and timing of nitrogen, potassium and iron applications on disease incidence, especially Rhizoctonia sp. (brown patch) and Pythuium sp. Ratios of 1:1 or 2:1 (K to N) are being used with the intent that readily availabel K may promote more efficient N metobolism by the turfgrass plant compared with only N applied to turf. Timing of N applications is structured to supply approximately equal spring-summer and fall supplied amounts of N compared with N applied mostly in fall. Perennial ryegrass receiving treatments 1, 2, 3, and 6 consistantly ranked high for quality and color compared with other treatments when averaged for 3 seasons: spring, summer, and fall, 1992. Annual nitrogen total for each of these treatments was 5 lb N/1,000 sq ft/yr which may account for less rust disease in October, 1992, compared with several treatments receiving only 2.5 lb N/1,000 sq ft/yr. Rhizoctonia sp. and anthrancnose (Colletotrichum sp.) were observed in plots during 1992, but there was no association with specific treatments."
