| Abstract/Contents: | "Several cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass, tall fecsue and perennial ryegrass were exposed to simulated traffic from 1988 through 1991. The cultivar studies used were part of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP). Turf quality is often the simultaneous perception of turf color, texture, and density. Turf color and texture were not considered as a component of turf quality in this study. Turf density and retention of a vegetative mat or thatch were given more consideration when rating turf quality of cultivars receiving traffic in this study. Traffic was applied until differences were apparent and most of the plots displayed less than 50% turf cover. Turf was evaluated 'after traffic' and 'after recovery'. Superior traffic tolerant Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass cultivars were identified. With the cultivars currently marketable, it is prudent to select cultivars carefully when choosing a Kentucky bluegrass, and less important for tall fescue or perennial ryegrass used in high traffic situations." |
