| Abstract/Contents: | "Core aerification, topdressing, and N treatments were initiated in midseason 1987 to investigate their influence on thatch and quality of Zoysia japonica Steud., cv. 'Meyer'. Aerification and topdressing treatments were applied in July and September, 1987, and June and August during the 1988 - 90 growing seasons. Nitrogen, ureaformaldehyde (38-0-0, N-P-K), was applied to designated plots at seasonal rates of 25 and 49 kg ha⁻1 in 1987, and 98 and 196 kg ha⁻1 during 1988 - 90. Thatch was minimal in this study and never exceeded 3 mm depth. Dry weight of mat decreased in response to increasing rates of N from 0 to 98 and 196 kg ha⁻1. However, aerification, topdressing and N did not influence mat depth after 3.5 years. All turf showed good to excellent color and quality during the 3.5 yr study regardless of treatment. Root weights of zoysiagrass receiving annual totals of 98 kg N ha⁻1 decreased 34% and root weights of turf receiving 196 kg N ha⁻1 decreased 56% compared with unfertilized turf. Therefore, fertilization with the least amount of N consistent with acceptable quality and color would be prudent for maintaining maximum zoysiagrass root systems." |
