Abstract/Contents:Extracting monolithes from turfgrass areas that had been established as early as 1976, and placing the soils into lysimeters, three kinds of nitrate fertilizers (calcium ammonium nitrate, floranid and nitrozol) were tested to acertain their percentage of washing out over the course of a three month period (May-August, 1989). The amounts of fertilizers applied to the soil were limited to 45g/m2. It was found that calcium ammonium nitrate released far more amounts of nitrates into the infiltration than current safety standards allow. Although the floranid and nitrozol demonstrated less washing out, when first applied even they release more nitrates than the grasses alone can take in. The variability of the amounts of nitrates washed out had far more relation to the kind of nitrate used rather than the composition of the soil bed. "... The loss of nitrogen by washing out was generally very low, amounting at the utmost to 11.3 per cent of the quantity of nitrogen applied." The lower washing out rates and amounts that the slow release fertilizers floranid and nitrozol demonstrate make them the far safer choice for year round use that avoids contaminating the infiltration water.
