Abstract/Contents:"Light plays an important role in the growth and development of turfgrasses. Adaptation to light and shade varies greatly among species, even among cultivars of the same species. Shade influences the microclimate by changing light intensity and humidity on the turf surface. Both light intensity and air movement decreases under shady conditions. Shade affects the morphology of the shoot and roots of turfgrass. Leaves in shade are longer but narrower, and the nodes are larger. The decrease of rootmass is greater than that of shoots and the rooting system has a shallower distribution. Because of a decrease in chlorophyll and stomata, the anatomy of the grasses changes, thereby affecting photosynthesis. For some species, competitivesness increases in shady conditions. For example, Festuca rubra ssp. and Poa trivialis appear mor [more] shade tolerant than Poa pratensis and Lolium perenne. A better competitiveness in shade is not only due to higher shade tolerance, but also to better adaptation to shade."
