Abstract/Contents:"All normal plant functions require water, even during cold winter months. However, if water loss exceeds water uptake, the resulting water deficit in the plants will lead to desiccation of the living tissues and their eventual death. Prolonged dry, windy conditions with frigid temperatures and no snow cover are most conducive to desiccation injury. All grasses may succumb to desication if the appropriate conditions prevail, but exposed or elevated sites are particularly vulnerable." Snow cover and artificial covers provide protection against desiccation. Low temperatures can damage turf grass. Annual bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue are partially susceptible to winter burn, bluegrasses and Kentucky bluegrass can survive this ordeal successfully. Ice causes "toxic gasses [to] accumulate beneath the ice, the soil becomes anaerobic, and the grass plants asphyxiate. ... ice sheet removal is a debatable procedure since the physical damage occasional in the removal process may well negate any benefits." Winter damage can also be caused by traffic. Snow cover may prevent this unless skiing, sledding, etc. is allowed. Snow molds can take advantage of dormant grasses. Preventive fungicide applications may be required to protect turf over winter.
