Abstract/Contents:Ten clones from three varietal populations were investigated in two successive years. Broad-sense heritability of total N content was 34%, of nonprotein N 48%, ammonia 89%, nitrates 56%, amides 31% and nitrate reductase activity 24%. Significant correlations found between both total N and ammonia content, on the one hand, and nonprotein N and ammonium ion concentration, on the other, suggest that ammonia content is a useful indicator of efficiency in organic N assimilation.
