Abstract/Contents: | In a reclamation project at the Usibelli coal mine, various grass spp. sown in 1972-9 were evaluated for stand development and survival in 1980-1. Bromus inermis and 2 indigenous spp. Festuca rubra and Calamagrostis canadensis survived well, producing consistently greater biomass and showing greater survival ability than Alopecurus pratense, Phleum pratense, Poa pratensis or P. compressa. Other sown spp. survived only in certain microhabitats, or failed entirely. 10 legumes sown at the Usibelli mine showed little potential for reclamation; the 2 surviving spp., lucerne and white clover, showed poor biomass production. |
