Abstract/Contents:"In the short term it appears that new bioherbicides will most easily find a place in irrigated crop production possibly in the tropics or in other situations where the environment can be manipulated, such as in gardens and turf. The targeting of economically important weeds in irrigated and tropical/subtropical agroecosystems, such as paddy rice for bioherbicides appears to be an appropriate choice. In the medium term, developments in formulation to overcome dew requirements are likely to greatly broaden the scope of bioherbicide application. These developments may involve new partnerships between bioherbicide researchers, food technologists, and physical chemists. In the long term, a greater understanding of infection and resistance at the biochemical and cellular level and developments in genetic engineering will provide powerful new tools for bioherbicide development."
