| Abstract/Contents: | "Roads and their associated vegetation are everywhere in modern American life. They also have an impressive diversity of uses: everyhting from automobile traffic to dog-walking and school bus stops. Herbicides, often the predominant technique used to manage roadside vegetation, are coming under increasing public scrutiny. Concerns about their effects on public health, problems they can pose for wildlife, and their impacts on the visual appearance of roadsides have inspired citizens all across the country to press for changes in management practices. Activists have found that demonstrating successful alternatives, using legislative approaches and finding ways around deadlocked contoversy are important tools in making changes. Committment to sound integrated management techniques, quantitative pesticide use reduction goals, adequate posting and notification requirements, and no-spray options for homeowners are concepts that can be added to most existing programs to improve them. This article also summarizes effective responses to arguments frequently used in support of herbicide-based vegetation management." |
