Abstract/Contents: | Juxtaposes the practices and situations of a greenkeeper fifteen years ago (1914), when there were but a few hundred golf courses to be found the the United States, 70% of which were directly supervised by professionals, with those of today (1929), with over 4,000 golf courses, over 80% of which are taken care of by greenkeepers. A history of mowing equipment is given. The author stresses the importance of golf courses hiring a professionally trained greenkeepers, as the demands of a modern golf course far surpass the capabilities of the untrained, or agriculturally trained farmer. A history of fertilizers is given, as is an overview of turf diseases, particularily brown patch. The author advocates the use of sulphate of ammonia as a fertilizer. The increased use of chemicals and other technologies means that the modern greenkeeper must keep abreast of recent developments if the ever intensifying demands upon the golf courses are to be met. |
