Abstract/Contents:The effects on carabids (mainly Pterostichus melanarius (Ill.),Harpalus affinis (Schr.) (aeneus (F.)), Anisodactylus sanctaecrucis (F.), Amara spp. and Stenolophus comma (F.), which had been shown to prey on Cydia pomonella (L.) and Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh)) of natural ground cover (with grass and weeds), fescue (Festuca rubra) and rye (Lolium perenne) turf types and of tillage were investigated in an apple orchard under pest management in Ontario in 1975-77. The carabids were sampled by 3 methods before and after treatment in various ways. There were no significant effects of type of ground cover on catches in pitfall traps, but the abundance of all the common species was significantly affected. Carabids detected in soil samples were usually most abundant in natural ground cover and least abundant in tilled plots. Ground cover type did not affect the structure or diversity of the carabid fauna.
