Abstract/Contents:Tests on experimental plots reveal that the common practice of covering turf with straw for the winter actually promotes the development of snow mold, as the straw keeps the soil at a constant temperature hovering around the freezing point. Fertilizing turf late in the fall also proved detrimental to the grasses, as the new growth was too susceptible to a fungus attack. It even proved nearly impossible to control the fungus with corrosive sublimates if the grass had been fertilized late in the fall. The mowing height seemed to have little if any effect upon the grasses' resistance. Although the exact pathogen is not known, the Fusarium strain is not always responsible for the damages, as had been previously thought. Some turfgrasses seem more naturally resistant to the disease, the reasons for which remain yet unclear. The use of corrosive sublimate at a rate of 2 ounces per 1,000 square feet kept the damage in check, while 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet prevented any severe injury. Calomel proved even more effective due to its insolubility.
