Abstract/Contents: | In trials begun in 1961 a degraded grassland deominated by Nardus stricta was given 50 or 200 kg N/ha. Some of the plots were ploughed and resown with meadow fescue/timothy/Festuca rubra/Poa pratensis/birdsfoot trefoil/white clover and given 50 kg N in the first year and 200 kg N/ha in subsequent years. In degraded stands on soil with pH 3.9, N had no effect on the proportion of N. stricta and F. rubra in the sward. After resowing, the sown species (especially timothy) increased. However, in subsequent years N. stricta again increased, even with high N. In stands on soil with pH 4.7, F. rubra and P. pratensis increased markedly with annual application of 50 kg N/ha. After resowing, the legumes and meadow fescue became widespread at first, but poorer species increased in subsequent years. On soil with pH 5.2, F. rubra and timothy were increased by N and at some sites Trisetum flavescens increased. In cultivated stands with subsoil water, legumes were reduced and grasses increased by 200 kg N/ha, the main increase being in Alopecurus pratensis. |
