Abstract/Contents:Root activity was studied in 1968-70 in a typical Trisetum flavescens meadow with a high proportion of Festuca rubra, by means of observation boxes installed in the soil. The number of living root tips reached a peak in early summer (May/June), decreased to its lowest level in midsummer (July/Aug.) and then increased to a 2nd peak in Sept./Oct. The interval between peaks was 1 month longer in plots given 200 kg N + 120 kg P2O5 + 240 kg K2O/ha than in plots given no fertilizer. 54% of the root tips lived for (1 month and only 10-15% for )4 months. The ratio of long-lived to short-lived roots was 1:4 and the long-lived roots were produced only during the 2nd half of the year, most of them lasting through the winter until the following spring or early summer. Nutrient deficiency tended to prolong the lifetime of roots. Most roots (65-70%) ceased elongation within 2 weeks after appearance. About 20% of roots increased in length for 2-4 weeks, and only 1% continued elongating for )10 weeks. Root elongation decreased from spring to summer and then increased to a higher point in late autumn (Nov.). Daily average elongation rate was 3 mm.
