Abstract/Contents:"The technique of pattern analysis was used to investigate the structure of a fixed dune grassland at Newborough Warren. The most abundant species in the grassland exhibited two scales of pattern: a small-scale pattern of high productivity alternating with low, superimposed on a similar large-scale pattern. The four most abundant species, Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis, Carex arenaria and C. flacca, were all positively inter-correlated at the small pattern scale. It is suggested that the pattern is environmentally controlled. Microtopographic studies revealed that the corresponding small-scale microtopo- graphic pattern was a direct result of litter and humus accumulation. The large-scale pattern in the vegetation was negatively correlated with the large-scale pattern in soil level, possibly indicating a water deficiency in the summer months."
