Abstract/Contents:"The distribution of species, particularly the annuals, within the dune system at Aberffraw, Anglesey, is described using ordination and pattern analyses. Ordination showed that the maximal vegetational variation was related to the soil moisture regime. Total nitrogen, extractable phosphorus and exchangeable potassium showed a slight trend from the low dunes to fixed blow-outs, and this was attributed to a leaching gradient. The overall distribution of the annuals, which were rare or absent in wet slacks, appeared to be controlled by the moisture status of soil. Pattern analysis of six annuals, Aira praecox, Cerastium atrovirens, Erophila verna, Mibora minima, Saxifraga tridactylites and Vulpia membranacea, and of Festuca rubra showed two scales of pattern. The primary scale of pattern of the annuals is attributed to restricted seed dispersal, and of F. rubra to its morphology. The secondary scale of pattern of F. rubra, which is relatively more abundant in hollows than on hummocks, is related to soil microtopography, whereas that of the annuals is interpreted as an inverse pattern imposed upon them by the pattern of F. rubra."
