| Abstract/Contents: | "Thirty-six commercial varieties, experimental accessions and composite blends of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were evaluated for turfgrass performance under frequent close mowing conditions during the bermudagrass overseed season in Tucson, Arizona. Entries were evaluated for color, quality, percent plot cover, and when warranted, for ball speed using a USGA stimpmeter." Plots were seeded at 35 lbs./1000 ft[2 (Oct. 26, 1988) on sand-based rootzones with 25 lbs. of 13-27-4 fertilizers applied 10 days later to promote seedling vigor. Nitrogen fertilizer (20-10-7 or 10-6-4) was applied every three weeks at a rate of .5 lbs. [#2]. An experimental PE-8 was consistantly in the top five ranking for quality throughout the season. The mean color score was 6.0 on May 5 and 5.6 on May 24. This decrease was due to increased temperatures. |
