| Abstract/Contents: | Through flowering and germination, a better understanding of the Hilaria belangeri's crop improvement by conventional breeding techniques, variation in germinability, and ability to be established from seed to a commercial level may be obtained. This is important because this turf is able to survive on 30 cm of rainfall per year, making it beneficial in arid or drought regions. One hundred flowering spikes were selected and put in a greenhouse at the University of Arizona. Data collected were (a) number of spikelets per spike; (b) number of stigma pairs per spike; (c) duration of stigma emergence; (d) the period separating pistillate and staminate flowering; (e) the number of anthers per spike; and (f) the duration of anther emergence and pollen dehiscence. Matured germinated inflorescences were collected from 12 range locations (9/2/87 and 10/11/87). Twelve seed blocks with three different treatments consisting of: distilled de-ionized water, gibberellic acid, and potassium nitrate were initiated. Gibberellic acid significantly increased germination suggesting a genetic influence on germination. Spikelet number per spike and stigma number per spike appeared to be related to the length of time the plant material was grown in the greenhouse. |
