Abstract/Contents:Discusses the effect of salinity on zoospore production, mycelial growth of Pythium and the potential effects of salinity on predispositions of Penncross creeping bentgrass to cottany blight. Mycelial growth was given an initial growth of 12 hours with measurements occurring at 24 and 48 hours. Cultures were incubated at 14, 20, 25, and 30°C. The Penncross creeping bentgrass was planted in a mixture of 90 and 10% sand. After three months of growth, the plants were irrigated daily with 50 ml of a NaCl and CaClz solution. Plants were then incubated under temperatures ranging between 32-35°C. After a seven-day incubation period plants were inoculated; monitored the next seven days for Pythium blight, and rated as having complete tissue necrosis or no disease symptoms. Mycelial growth rate of P. aphanidermatum and all other species of Pythium significantly increased at all salinity levels up to 7.1 ds/m at all temperatures tested. Zoospore production of all species were totally inhibited at 14.2 ds/m; sensitivity to salt concentrations depended upon species. Results indicated that increased salinity levels predispose Penncross bentgrass to cottony blight caused by P. aphanidermatum. Salinity accelerated the onset and development of disease and more importantly broadened the temperature range over which severe disease has been reported to be a problem. Fluctuations in salinity levels may account for the sporadic occurrence of cottony blight on golf courses.
