| Abstract/Contents: | Surveys previous research on nematodes and outlines the more recent developments in the study of nematodes. Discusses the varying kinds of nematodes and describes in detail the effects of an infestation of the parasitic variety on the surface appearance of turfgrass. As the visual results of a nematode attack resemble any number of turf problems, proper identification is of paramount importance, especially since the mere presence of nematodes in soil is no indicator of an injurious factor to turf. The correct way to obtain samples of soil to send to a professional nematode testing facility are given. In addition, three methods for nematode control are described, including sterilization of the plantbed, sanitation of the topdressing as well as suggested methods for combatting nematodes in established turf. Although some methods for this last procedure are being developed, much more research is needed before a completely effective method can be attained. |
