Abstract/Contents:"Gibberellic acid (GA3) was applied at 0, 100, and 500 ppm to decaploid and hexaploid tall fescue genotypes. Plants were grown hydroponically for 3 weeks in a growth chamber at 20°C. With 0 GA3 the decaploid was 50% higher than the hexaploid in apparent photosynthesis (APS) and photorespiration (PR) per unit leaf area, although both had similar concentrations of chlorophyll. Leaf elongation rate with 0 GA3 was about 40% higher in the hexaploid, leaf area/plant was about 130% higher, and total biomass yield was 50% higher than in the decaploid. Leaf elongation rate was doubled by 500 ppm GA3 in both genotypes, whereas APS and PR were reduced by 25% for the decaploid and 50% for the hexaploid. Appearance rates of tillers and leaves were reduced by GA3, consequently yield was little affected. Leaf sections are being characterized for anatomical changes due to ploidy and GA3."
