Abstract/Contents:Describes a new kind of potassium glass or frit comprised of 36% K2O possessing a very low solubility and rapid weathering capability allowing for quick and prolonged release of potassium into the soil. Whileas normal applications of potassium will become washed out of the soil after the first leaching, potassium coming from the glass is still present even after 16 leachings. Furthermore, it is estimated that 5-20 pounds per thousand square feet would suffice to maintain sufficient potassium levels on most soils (20-30 pounds for sandier soils or soils receiving heavy rain or irrigation). The role that potassium applications should occupy within a total fertilization program is also discussed.
