Abstract/Contents:Differing experimental sand-soil-peat mixtures were investigated to ascertain which would prove to be superior. The clipping yield and total root weight were used as the qualifiers. Commercial concrete sand, Houston black clay soil and a black cultivated peat sedge were employed. All components were used in their natural form and in five sieved sizes. A single core of Texturf I F, (formerly T-35A) Bermudagrass was established and compaction was simulated by an impact device. It was found that the 1-0.5 millimeter and mixed particle size yielded the most clipping weight. Root weight increased with a correspondiong decrease in particle size. Within the 1-0.5 mm particle size, the compacted soil mixtues that produced the most pronounced surface and root growth had 5-10% Houston black clay by volume, or 2-4% clay by weight. Larger amounts of clay greatly reduced non-capillary porosity and permeability.
