Abstract/Contents:"The uptake of phosphorus from waterlogged dune and slack soils by Agrostis stolonifera, Festuca rubra, Carex flacca and C. nigra was studied in a glasshouse pot experiment. The phosphorus contents of shoots and roots of the grasses tended to decline with waterlogging and those of the Carices to increase. Phosphorus uptake was greater from slack sand than dune sand even though the latter had a higher total phosphorus content. Evidence is presented that the reduced growth of Festuca rubra with waterlogging could be due to immobilization of phosphorus in roots by iron. Carex flacca, collected from the field, exhibited increased phosphorus content with site wetness. Plants from the field had much higher phosphorus contents than those in the pot experiment, probably because of higher organic matter content of field soils. Samples of Agrostis stolonifera collected from the field did not demonstrate any effect of site wetness on phosphorus content of shoots."
