Abstract/Contents:Acetylene reduction by moss-algal crusts collected from Festuca arundinacea fields in Georgia, USA, was demonstrated in laboratory tests. Nitrogenase activity was greater in crusts from 3 and 4 year old fields than from younger fields, and was increased by the addition of an N-free nutrient medium to the incubation flasks. Nitrogenase activity was greater in soil crust samples containing both moss and blue-green algae than in samples containing algae alone. Nostoc and Anabaena were the dominant blue green algae in the older fields, while Bryum and Weisia were the dominant mosses. Light microscopy revealed algal colonies located on moss leaf scales.
