Abstract/Contents: | "There are four primary functions of a soil. It provides support, nutrients, water and air (oxygen). In addition ... it must resist compaction...during all kinds of weather conditions. It must hold a properly played golf shot ... [and] must provide the primary requirements to a plant handicapped by the attrition of traffic and constant close mowing." Air and water circulation within the soil are described, and the importance of a balanced capillary pore space vs. non-capillary pore space. Some methods of improving an existing soil are mentioned, and an outline of a proper procedure for a putting green construction concludes the article. |
