| Abstract/Contents: | "Broadleaf plantain (Plantago majorL.) and blackseed plantain (Plantago rugelii Dcne.) are very similar species and difficult to distinguish. Each are tap-rooted, rosette-forming perennials with broad leaf blades tapering abruptly to long narrow petioles. Both species are common in turfgrass in the Northeastern U. S., often occurring side-by-side in the same field. While combinations of phenoxy herbicides + dicamba were used for broadleaf weed control, there was little impetus to ensure accurate identification, as both species were adequately (if not completely controlled). However, in testing nonphenoxy alternatives we noticed what appeared to be one species escaping certain treatments. Consequently, investigations were initiated to document the taxonomic and control differences between the species." |
