Abstract/Contents:"Four cool-season turfgrass species were studied for their ability to constrain the growth of two perennial dicot weeds, one stoloniferous and one rhizomatous, when grown under four fertilizer regimes. The study was established in June 1992 by planting 4-inch diameter plugs of mugwort (Artmisia vulgaris L.) and ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea L.) into four established turfgrasses: Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. cv. Nassau), chewing fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. commutata Gaud. cv. Jamestown), tall fescue (F. arundinacea Schreb. cv. Jaguar) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. Patriot), plus newly seeded 'Repel' perennial ryegrass and bare ground. Established turfgrasses were seeded in the fall of 1987. Newly seeded perennial ryegrass was seeded in the fall of 1991. Each turf type was fertilized 0, 1, 2, or 4 lb N/1000 ft per year starting in 1991 and continuing throughout the experiment duration. Weed growth was recorded annually for two years."
