Abstract/Contents:Irrigation of turf surfaces on golf courses should be guided by many factors that take into consideration the site's and grass' specific requirements. The drainage and evaporation rates must be taken into consideration, and irrigation must never exceed the grass' capacity to absorb natural rainfall should it come after an irrigation sprinkling. Irrigating the grass just as it begins to wilt can be a method of conserving water as well, although the dryness tolerance of the grass must be well known. In order to take into account and incorporate as many of these facets of water conservation and irrigation, many courses are installing computer systems that coordinate all the watering systems of the whole course and can plan, alter of suspend programmed irrigation as needed. A flexible system can irrigate according to need, irrigate intermittently (Cycle and Soak), perform a "dry run" (Trockenlauf) that can test errors before any water is applied, it can hydraulically control all water on the course and thereby conserve water. Choice of the sprinklers to be used is no less important.
