Abstract/Contents:"Weeds inhibit establishment of stands and diminish the quality of wildflower meadows. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of mulches in limiting weed growth and in improving quality of wildflower meadows. Mulches were evaluated for efficacy in weed control in greenhouse and field studies. A mulch of biosolids-woodchips compost was placed directly on soil or on other mulches, such as sheets of paper, fabric, or plastic that inhibit penetration of weeds into the compost. Wildflowers were seeded directly into the mulch. Weed suppression by the mulches was assessed from emergence and biomass of weeds. Newspaper, kraft paper, landscape fabric, and spunbonded polyester layered under the compost were as effective in weed control as plastic or herbicide (diphenamid) under the compost. A mulch of compost at least 1.5 inches thick was needed for weed suppression without an underlying material, whereas a 0.5-inch compost mulch was adequate with an underlying mulch of newspaper. Without the weed-suppressing layer under compost, weeds may outcompete wildflowers in response to the nutrients added by the compost."
