Abstract/Contents:The effects of seed source and seed size on percentage germination and field performance were examined in 5 grasses. In Yorkshire fog, cocksfoot and timothy, 100-seed weight ranged from 7 to 43 mg, from 60 to 126 mg and from 22 to 71 mg, respectively, and percentage germination increased with increase in seed weight. The same trend was evident in Chewings fescue and browntop but the results were not significant. In cocksfoot, Chewings fescue and timothy, higher seed weights were found in samples collected at altitudes above those generally used for the commercial seed production of the species. In field trials seed samples of Yorkshire fog, cocksfoot, Chewings fescue, timothy and browntop from 6, 15, 10, 15 and 35 different sources, respectively, were surface-sown with or without 225 kg diammonium phosphate/ha on an eroded high-altitude site in Southland. In most cases seed from local, high-altitude sources gave the best seedling establishment and early growth. Fertilizer application significantly increased establishment and growth.
