Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this research was to determine the impact of paclobutrazol and nitrogen fertilizer on annual bluegrass infestation and seedhead suppression in an established bermudagrass sward. Two applications, separated by 8 weeks, of paclobutrazol, were applied as a foliar spray (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 kg a.i./ha.) to an established sward of annual bluegrass and bermudagrass. Poa annua infestation and seedhead supression were found to be inversely proportional to paclobutrazol rates, regardless of application time. Bermudagrass phytotoxicity occurred at the two highest concentrations. Pacobutrazol, applied at 0.50 kg. a.i./ha., + a nitrogen fertilizer application, gave significantly better results, in terms of reduced annual bluegrass populations and seedhead suppression and improved bermudagrass quality. All paclobutrazol concentrations suppressed seedhead production of annual bluegrass. This study demonstrates that paclobutrazol can be used successfully to control annual bluegrass in bermudagrass although it is recognised that cheaper, alternative chemicals are available."
