Abstract/Contents:"The soil is an important part of the terrestrial ecosystem and is often ignored in our planting and design either because it is out of sight or because it is not considered as having significant influence on plant growth. Another misnomer is that if the soil presents a problem it can be easily overcome or modified adequately for the purposes at hand, usually by the addition of some amendment. Unfortunately, these oversights occur too commonly in urban landscape activities...Our purpose here is to contrast natural soil with urban soil and discuss the conditions presented by the latter that create problems for the urban tree and its root system. We will also examine the special problems of the standard tree pit and suggest ways to assess urban soils." Defines natural, agricultural, potting, and urban soils. Discusses characteristics of the soils including variability, susceptibility to compaction, aeration, drainage, hydrophobic crusts, pH, soil temperature, organic matter, soil specifications, particle size distribution, soil reaction, soil content, debris content, contaminant content, tree planting techniques, and maintenance tips.
