Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrass cultivation, particularly on the Swan Coastal Plain of southern-western Australia, has traditionally involved high rates of application of irrigation water and fertilizers. Eutrophication problems of surface and groundwaters in the region, which is becoming a major environmental issue, are contributed to by nutrient runoff from cultivated turf areas. A number of strategies are potentially available to reduce the adverse environmental impacts of turfgrass cultivation, and in so doing reduce turf maintenance costs without reducing turf quality and amenity. These strategies include development of modified irrigation and fertilizer application practices which are better matched to plant requirements than those currently used, and will result in reduced nutrient runoff from turfgrass areas. The turf irrigation and nutrient study (TINS) aims to provide data and develop methodology for better management for public turfgrass areas, particularly on the Swan Coastal Plain. The primary aim of the project is to produce a turf management manual, using existing information where possible, and supplemented with research information on irrigation and fertlizer requirements gained from field work undertaken as part of the project."
