Abstract/Contents: | "The mowing tolerance of several cultivars of Kentuucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) has not been determined under environmental conditions prevalent in Japan. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars under different cutting heights. Forty-three cultivars were planted on October, 1989 and after establishment, plants were mown at 10, 20, 25, 30, and 40 mm for two years. Density of plants after establishment (original density) was compared with the density of the plants after mowing at different heights for 2 years (final density). There were significant differences among the cultivars under different mowing heights. Cultivars performed best under the 30 mm mowing height followed by 40, 25, 20, and 10 mm, respectively. 'Touchdown' and 'Leona' exhibited the best tolerance to all mowing heights. Significant differences were observed among cultivars for a given mowing height suggested that mowing height tolerance range is different among cultivar under Japanese climatic condition." |
