Abstract/Contents:Three morphologically identical varieties of Festuca rubra could be identified from distinctive esterase patterns of their seed extracts after electrofocusing in polyacrylamide gels. Closely similar wheat and barley varieties could be distinguished by the pattern of gliadins after electrophoresis in starch gels. In the wheat varieties Drabant (Bodyguard) and Sappo, these patterns were constant and not affected by growing site or nitrogen content. Peroxidase isozyme variation was not a reliable index of varietal differences in Poa pratensis. Examples are given of Swedish awards of plant breeders' rights, where varietal distinctness has been established through electrophoresis and electrofocusing.
