Abstract/Contents:"A putting green in Bedford, New York, was chosen for the trial because of relatively high population of cyst nematodes. The turf was a mixture of annual bluegrass and bentgrass. The putting green, approximately 50 years old, was built on native clay soil, with an upper layer of 8 cm of sandy soil. Mechanical analysis of the top 8 cm showed it to be 78.4% sand, 15% silt, 6.6% clay. USDA criteria would classify this as a loamy sand based on the sand subfractions. Plots were 3.34 mā‚‚, six replications per treatment and completely randomized. There were two treatments: an untreated control and Nemacur (37.5 g/3.34 sq. m). Nemacur was applied on 14 Apr. 93. A second treatment of Nemacur was applied 20 Sep 93. These dates were selected based on previous data which indicated that these were periods when juveniles would hatch. Ten subsamples per plot were taken monthly, bulked, and extracted twice. Nematodes were recovered by wet sieving/sugar flotation and the cysts were crushed to release eggs and juveniles. Only second stage juveniles were recorded. The data were subjected to a one-way analysis of variance and a test of LSD. Highly significant differences in nematode populations between the two treatments were observed 21 Jun through 24 Oct, although no differences in turf health were noted between treatments on any of the extraction dates. This may indicate that the population of cyst nematodes in the untreated control was below the damage threshhold; however, due to less than ideal growing conditions, turf was not vigorous and roots diminished across all treatments."
