| Abstract/Contents: | Seedlings were grown in culture solutions, containing NaCl at concentrations of 0, 10 or 40 mM, between four and eight weeks after sowing. Root development was inhibited by NaCl in F. rubra subsp. fallax, but not in the halophyte F. rubra subsp. littoralis. The growth of shoots of both subspecies diminished to a similar extent with increasing salinity. Increasing salinity also was accompanied by a thickening of the inner tangential walls of the endodermis in both subspecies. At either 0 or 10 mM NaCl, however, the endodermis wall was thicker in subsp. littoralis than in subsp. fallax. Roots of subsp. littoralis, collected from a saline habitat, exhibited layers of cortical cells with thickened and lignified walls which were absent in subsp. fallax, collected from its natural habitat. |
