Abstract/Contents:"Plots were established May 1992 at University of Nebraska John Seaton Anderson Turfgrass and Ornamental Research Facility, Mead, NE. The experimental design was a three factor randomized complete block with five replications. The three factors were cultivar blend, nitrogen rate and nitrogen carrier... Nitrogen rates of 0, 2, 4, or 8 lb actual N/1000ft² were applied to the ryegrass plots. Urea, 46-0-0, was used as the quick release nitrogen and sulfur-coated urea, 32-0-0, as the slow release carrier. Fertilizer treatments were initiated 18 May and continuted monthly until 5 Oct. Crown rust was not detected until late Aug; the disease then developed rapidly, becoming severe by early Oct. Crown rust was significantly less severe on Manhattan II and the blend than on Manhattan at all nitrogen rates. Nitrogen at 8 lb/1000 ft² effectively suppressed crown rust on both of the cultivars and on the blend. Turf quality was negatively correlated (r= -0.81) with crown rust severity. Manhattan II fertilized at 8 lb N/1000 ft² showed the highest quality. Data shows that both nitrogen rate and cultivar blend affect crown rust severity and turf quality. There were no significant interactions between nitrogen rates and the slow-or quick-release carriers; therefore, only the effect of N rate is reported."
