Abstract/Contents:"The phenoxy herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D) and 2- (2 methyl-4-chlorophenoxy) propionic acid (MCPP) have auxin-like growth-regulating properties and are extensively used for the control of broad-leaf angiosperm weeds. The microbiological degradation of 2,4-D by pure and mixed cultures has been examined in a number of studies, recently reviewed...However, only few studies have been published on the bacterial degradation of MCPP...Mixed cultures of bacteria enriched from soil samples were demonstrated to degrase MCPP, but in pure culture none of the isolates were able to utilize MCPP as the sole source of carbon and energy...We have previously evaluated the concurrent microbiological degradation of 2,4-D and MCPP in stirred tank reactors...For the present paper, we examined the utilization of the two substrates by three mixed cultures that had a previously history of growth with the respective single phenoxy herbicide."
