| Abstract/Contents: | "A survey of 20 out of 41 golf courses in the county of Kent, England, showed them to be of considerable importance in protecting wildlife and landscape. Some rare species populations and relict landscape types are almost confined to golf courses. Statutory protective designations by conservation authorities recognise this. Most features of wildlife or landscape interest were associated with the less intensively managed rough, rather than the fairways and greens, which were commonly managed on agronomic principles. The extent of rough was strongly positively correlated with the extent of the course. Some clubs were aware of the wildlife and landscape value of their courses and managed accordingly. Others were not, and there is a great potential for more regard to be paid to their protection in the design and management of courses." |
