Abstract/Contents: | The oviposition preferences of 5 species of Oscinella for different Gramineae were investigated in the laboratory at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England. O. frit (L.) laid most of its eggs on oats, Lolium multiflorum and Festuca rubra, relatively few on barley and virtually none on Dactylis glomerata. None of the other Oscinella species oviposited on cereals. O. vastator (Curt.) appeared to be the most polyphagous, and its preferred oviposition plants were L. multiflorum, L. perenne and F. pratensis; few eggs were laid on F. rubra, Agrostis tenuis or Poa pratensis. The oviposition preferences of the other species were more restricted; O. nitidissima (Mg.) preferred A. tenuis although it laid a few eggs on Lolium spp.; O. maura (Fall.) (albiseta (Mg.)) oviposited only on D. glomerata; and O. nigerrima (Macq.) oviposited almost entirely on Arrhenatherum elatius. The distribution of eggs by O. frit on L. multiflorum and Agrostis tenuis was different from that on oats; on the grasses, most eggs were laid within the withered leaf-sheath, while on oats most were laid within the coleoptile. The oviposition sites of O. nitidissima, O. nigerrima and O. albiseta on their preferred grasses were similar to those of O. frit on grasses. O. frit laid the most eggs on grasses that were at the 5-leaf stage and were tillering. |
