Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrasses grown in Florida sandy soils are severely injured by ectoparasitic nematodes, especially Belonolaimus longicaudatus Rau, the sting nematode. Petrochemical pesticides are fast disappearing as a control option, because of their groundwater solubility, short-term effect, and high mammalian toxicity. Biorational alternatives (resistant cultivars and natural enemy enhancement) are new weapons in a defense strategy which is compatible with the delicate Florida landscape ecosystem. We propose a self-sustaining and energy efficient approach to nematode management, but it will require a new scientific knowledge of the sting nematode and its interaction with turfgrass hosts."
